The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

Sisters Vianne and Isabelle Rossignol are forced to overcome many challenges even before they are thrust into the horror of WWII in France.  One is forced to suffer the consequences of unimaginable decisions to protect her young daughter and her home.  The other becomes the Nightingale.  Allied airmen shot down over France are whisked away by members of the French resistance and spirited into Spain over the Pyrenees back to England to share what they have learned.  It is the Nightingale who leads the way.  This is the story of the war fought away from the battle fields and the camps, the strains that hunger and fear place on people we love and above all the incredible bravery of those determined to survive.  Everyone of its 448 pages of this haunting story is worth the read.
