Louisa Clark is desperate for work in her small English village. She takes a job as a caregiver for Will Traynor, once a handsome, athletic, socially gifted young man. Because of an accident, he is now a quadriplegic. Louisa can match Will sarcasm for sarcasm which turns out to be good medicine for his depressed outlook on life. But this is not a life that Will wants and Louisa must decide what she will do when it becomes clear what Will really wants of her. There is an element of romance but it is quality of life issues that are at the core of the story.
