Origin by Diana Abu-Jaber
Lena Dawson has grown up believing that her biological parents were killed in a plane crash in an unnamed jungle, that she survived and was cared for by a gentle gorilla mother until she was rescued and placed with a foster family in Syracuse, NY. There was an emotional strain to their relationship mostly because Lena was never actually adopted by the man and woman who want to be called her parents. Now Lena is employed by the forensic lab in Syracuse and is involved in a mysterious series of baby deaths - all attributed to SIDS. Lena seems to have an inexplicable ability to sense the real truth in police cases and feels like these deaths are not what they seem. The closer she gets to solving this crime, the more the understanding of her own origins are challenged. Of course there is the handsome, lonely, gentle fellow policeman to support her professionally - and personally.
