The Gathering by Anne Enright
The dysfunction in this Irish family is both historical and current. Veronica, who is somewhere in the middle of the 12 person Hegarty clan, has gone to England to claim the body of her wild child brother Liam. Back in Dublin, the remaining family members, including the somewhat foggy Mammy, gather in a less than genial atmosphere. There is nothing surprising about the childhood events that left Liam scarred and his suicide eventual. Everyone's life is at least a little wrong and perhaps it is all debts to be paid for the bad choice made a couple of generations ago.
