Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese
An Indian nun gives birth to twins in a mission hospital in Ethiopia. The suspected father is a renown if somewhat odd British surgeon, Thomas Stone whose work seems miraculous given the conditions at "Missing" (aka mission) hospital. Unable to acknowledge his role in the birth of the twins and distraught over the death of their mother, he disappears. The turmoil surrounding the last years of Haile Salassie's reign is the backdrop for the story of the twins who both go on to be famous doctors. It is a story of place, of class, of the definition of family and maybe of miracles.
