The Help by Kathryn Stockett
I loved the three narrators in this story of Jackson, Mississippi circa 1963. Aibilene has raised the children and taken care of the house for a number of white families. A proud, wise woman, she often leaves the families when the children outgrow their "color-blindness". Sassy Minny moves from family to family as well but mostly because she cannot keep from speaking her piece when the white folks are "acting like fools". Skeeter should be proud member of Jackson's white elite but she dreams of a career in journalism and can't shake the feeling that the rules that have governed her society for generations are about to be shattered. These three characters take the lead in creating a book that looks behind the facade the Jackson society with the eyes of "the help". As much as I wish this were a historical novel, I'm afraid there is much that speaks to our world today.
