Ship of Brides by Jojo Moyes
So maybe this qualifies as chic lit but the historical connection is intriguing. The back story is that during WWII, many British soldiers (and I imagine Americans as well) married young Australian girls while stationed there during the war. They left them behind when the fighting took them elsewhere and, at the end of the war, the British government made arrangements to transport these girls to England. This story follows the lives of four of these war brides who find themselves in a group of 600 women hoping to reconnect with their husbands on an aircraft carrier headed (with a male crew of course) to England. Their stories are all different and the most interesting of all is the story of the woman who knows there is no one waiting for her. As it turns out often a woman on board the ship would receive a telegram which said simply "not necessary. don't come." and she would be put off the ship at the next port to wait until another ship could transport her back to Australia. Now that's a story I would like to read. It would go something like...a young girl (already pregnant?) escapes her dismal family in rural Australia hoping for a new life with her British husband. Instead she finds herself abandoned in India. What happens? Did her hard life make her a survivor? Does she get lucky? You can thank me when you write the book. I will be glad to help with the research.
