Tallgrass by Sandra Dallas
Life in Ellis, Colorado flows in the predictable cycle of small town farming. That is until the United States government erects a Japanese interment camp named Tallgrass on the outskirts of the town. Rennie Stroud is just turning 13 and is bothered by the division this has caused among her previously compatible neighbors. Rennie's family becomes the focus of some of the town's anger when Rennie's father decides to hire some of the men in the camp to help him bring in his crops. When a young girl in the town is raped, things get worse. Taking wise counsel from her father, and insights into bravery from her mother, Rennie is clearly able to negotiate the prejudice and injustice of this period in our history. Part mystery, there is much history based on the Amache camp in Colorado. Dallas is very good at exploring the need to do the wrong thing for the right reason. This book is no exception.
