The Language of Secrets by Dianne Dixon

I can't decide if this is just an intriguing beach read or something that would generate interesting book group discussion.  Justin has been estranged from his family for years but when his new job takes him from Boston to California, his wife convinces him that it is time to reconnect.  As he approaches his old family home, he is reminded of the missing memories of his life as a child or young person - large holes in the story of his life.  When the young woman who greets him shuts the door in his face, he grows more puzzled particularly because he is pretty sure that she is his youngest sister.  Stranger still is the discovery that located between the headstones on his parent's graves is a headstone belonging to him.  What follows is a story of multiple layers of deception and generations of secrets.  The essential question explored in many of the relationships and events is when is the truth more damaging and dangerous than preserving a false reality and what is the cost of living that false reality.  Some of the things these characters do to preserve their world seem hard to believe but still the question could be interesting to consider.
