The Light between Oceans by M.L. Stedman

Tom Sherbourne is lighthouse keeper on an small island 100 miles off the shore of Western Australia.  He hopes the isolation of the job will help him recover from his horrible memories of his time as a soldier in WWl.  He eventually marries and brings his young wife Isabel to the island with hopes of raising a family there.  Their idyllic life is sadden only by the fact that Isabel suffers two early miscarriages.  Just after her third pregnancy ends in a stillborn baby, a small boat lands on the beach under the lighthouse.  In the boat is a man who is dead and a very young baby still alive.  Isabel convinces Tom that the mother has obviously drowned and the baby will end up in an orphanage if they don't simply pretend that the baby they found is the baby they lost.  One lie leads to another and soon they must decide on which would be the least destructive truth to tell.  To what degree are we willing to go to protect the ones we love?  And are there things we do in the name of love that can only result in that love's end.  I was about 500 on the library hold list for this book and was surprised when I got it in less than a month - until I read it.  There are many reasons why it has such a quick turn around time.
