Cezanne's Quarry by Barbara Corrado Pope

Using a reference to a "violent love affair" from a Cezanne biography by Rewald, Pope has imagined a murder in Aix with Cezanne as the possible perpetrator.  The action of the book covers a period of just 11 days, from the discovery of the body of a young girl in a quarry until the mystery is solved by a local somewhat insecure judge.  The names of the many of the characters are historically accurate, the setting is wonderfully French and all the elements of the mystery are believably resolved.  What I missed was any connection to the art world of the time.  Cezanne's friendship with Zola is referenced but no other artists are mentioned.  Of course this is a mystery and more about the social mores of the time than art history.  But really - this is Cezanne!
