The Borrower by Rebecca Makkai

Ten year old Ian Drake would spend all day in the library if children's librarian Lucy Hull would let him.  Ian's mother would like to control everything Ian reads and fears what he might learn from his reading now that he has moved beyond Hardy Boys.  The elephant in the room - everyone seems to agree that at some point in the future Ian will recognize that he is gay.  When his homophobic parents enroll him in the Church-of-we-can-ungay-you, Lucy knows she must do something to give Ian the strength to be who he is.  Then she finds Ian asleep in the library with a plan to leave home and a tale that tricks Luck into his willing kidnapper.  The style "borrows" from many of the most famous titles in children literature.  The humor often comes from poking fun at the traditional librarian image.  Lucy is nothing like that image and everything like real librarians.  And like all good librarians, there is no giving away the ending.
