Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear

These very British mysteries were recommended by a friend and I could very well get hooked.  Maisie was young and poor in the years before World War One.  Hard work and good luck find her about to enter Cambridge but the war intervenes.  In 1929, we find Maisie running a detective agency following in the footsteps of her mysterious mentor Maurice Blanche.  In this first book, we learn a little about Maisie's past.  We also learn about her ability to solve mysteries and watch her solve her first case. The atmosphere is very British, very WWl.  There are enough details left out of her story to make me want to know Maisie better and enough good mystery writing to want to read more.
