ROOM by Emma Donoghue

When she was nineteen, "Ma" was captured and held captive in 10 x 10 shed in her capture's backyard. Two years later she gave birth to Jack, the narrator of the story. From his five year old perspective we learn about Room and Table and Rug as the line between humans and objects blurs. His mother realizes that as bright as Jack is, he cannot continue to believe that this room is all that is real in the world. An escape plan is hatched and Jack finds himself in the world that he only thought existed on the "planets" he saw on TV. Finally free after seven years in captivity, the world proves to be as challenging as life in Room. Through Jack's childlike voice we examine the innocence of childhood, the profound connection between mother and child and the resiliency of the human spirit as they confront the evil face of the world.
