Th Optimist's Daughter by Eudora Welty

Oh those southern dysfunctional families. Years ago Laurel McKelva Hand escaped the hometown sludge that is part of being a member of an influential family. But when she is called back due to her father's illness, the eventual funeral and step-mother conflict lead her right back into the thick of it. This won the Pulitzer Prize in 1969.
