Shanghai Girls by Lisa See

This was a perfect book to read after our trip to China but even better to have read it before. Two sisters, "beautiful girls", are living the good life as poster models in the international city of Shanghai in the 1930's. Then fortunes change and they find themselves as impoverished wives in arranged marriages in Los Angeles. The events that occurred during the war years are more tales of the frightening policies of the US government and the embarrassing behavior of the American people. At the core of the story is the relationship between the two sisters. The is so much about history that we never learned in school. Thank goodness there is so much truth in fiction.
