The Bible by Karen Armstrong
This is classified as a biography - the story of a document as a living, changing thing - a collection of ancient stories - oral and written - the well from which three major religions draw the truths that define good and evil - saint, prophet or sinner. That their definitions are often the same and just as often different is a fascinating story. It is not about THE BIBLE but about the biblical tradition. I'm sure the biblical literalist consider this book heresy but Armstrong is a historian with a religious background who treats all the possibilities with respect and finds no reason to believe that anyone knows the truth more than another. The well researched history will provide a whole new lens to think about whatever biblical tradition you call yours.
