Still Alice by Lisa Genova
Fifty-three year old Alice Howland is a Harvard Ph.D. professor in cognitive psychology and noted author and presenter until early onset Alzheimer's chips away at her mind. Her all too rapid descent into confusion is frightening (and sometimes all too familiar!). Since her story is told in her voice, we are privy to the inner dilemma of knowing things don't make sense and not being able to do anything about it. The strain on the family is given equal attention. There is a genetic connection. What should her three grown children do? Do they want to know? What do you do if you do know? What about future generations? What do you do when the person you loved for years for her passionate intelligence and wit is no longer that person. This is a novel and Genova is not a doctor but this would be an insightful book for anyone who finds themselves in the Alzheimer's world.
